First-Time Sukkah Buyer's Guide: 5 Decisions and You're Done

Buying your first sukkah? Five decisions, in order, and you're done. This is the guide we wish every first-time customer had before Elul gets busy.

1. Pick the spot (before the sukkah)

Walk outside and find the place that's under open sky — no tree branches, no roof overhang, no balcony above. That's a halachic requirement, not a preference. Measure the open floor area and leave about 2 ft of clearance on the side where the door will be. Balcony? Measure railing-to-wall — there are sukkahs down to 3.6 ft wide.

2. Pick the size

Count the people at your usual Shabbos table and add two for guests, at roughly 8 sq ft per person: a family of 4–5 is comfortable in a 6×8 or 8×8; regular hosts want 8×10 or 8×12. The size guide has the full seating chart from 4×4 to 12×32.

3. Pick the model

  • Know your size, want the classic setup? EZ Build QUEEN (7.5 ft) or KING (8 ft) — metal-pole frame, fabric walls with clear windows, no tools, up in under an hour, 40+ sizes.
  • Might move or resize? The Magic Extendable telescopes to 26 sizes between 3.6×3.6 and 10×10 — buy once, adjust every year.
  • Traveling on Chol Hamoed? The pop-up Sukkah On the Go opens in minutes anywhere — many families own one alongside the main sukkah.
  • Want a permanent feel? Wooden panels — solid walls, configure any layout with door and window panels.

4. Pick the schach

Simplest path: choose a "With Schach" kit — it includes a flat bamboo mat matched to your sukkah's size, certified by the Badatz Eda Hachareidis of Yerushalayim. Buying separately, read how to choose schach: flat bamboo mats (22 sizes), Kaynus reed mats, premium Hamefoar, or traditional bamboo poles.

5. Don't forget the inside

The timeline

Sukkot 2026 begins Friday evening, September 25. Order by mid-September: most orders arrive in about 4 business days, and the checkout shows the exact shipping price and box count for your address — no estimates, no surprises. Then build right after Yom Kippur with the assembly guide open, and check the roof against the kosher checklist.
